Stop bashing farmers
Saturday, 13 February 2010

Jerry Cadagan and others in the environmental community want the public to believe that Senator Feinstein’s proposed water plan will harm the environment.

It won’t.

It is a temporary measure to get emergency water supplies to areas of the Valley hardest hit by recent water supply cuts.  At best farmers will still only get 40 percent of the water supplies they’re entitled to.  That 40 percent is much less than the amount of water Westside farms were getting 20 years ago and at that time salmon and other fish were doing just fine.

Isn’t it time the anti-ag folks admitted that there are other factors in the Delta that are harmful to fish and start doing something about them instead of continuing to bash farmers?

Valley Reps call for biological opinion reconsultation
Tuesday, 03 November 2009
WASHINGTON, DC –  Congressman Dennis Cardoza introduced bipartisan legislation today (11-3-09) that calls for a review of the federal biological opinions that have significantly reduced the amount of water flowing to San Joaquin Valley farmers. Congressmen Costa (D-Fresno) and Radanovich (R-Mariposa) joined as original cosponsors.

Specifically, the legislation calls for a “re-consultation” of the biological opinions on Salmon and Delta Smelt that have resulted in curtailments of water deliveries to the Valley. The biological opinions place unfair blame on Valley farmers and the pumps that deliver their water as the cause for declines in the Delta fish populations. Congressman Cardoza’s legislation would require a review of all factors affecting the survival of endangered species in the Delta, rather than simply focusing on cutting back water deliveries to the Valley.

Farmers, cities negotiate Calif. water swap

Competing farm, city districts try to strike water deal

Coalition viewpoint...This exchange helps reduce the potential of Westlands farmers from losing a share of next year's water supply that could flow to the ocean instead of farms.  It provides Metropolitan with water they can use now and possibly reduce the likelihood of more severe shortages next year.  This is an excellent example of the water user community working together to bring some flexibility back into the system that has been hobbled by questionable environmental restrictions in recent years.
