Second in a series of five regional posters, the San Joaquin Valley poster provides a look at how farm water is used in the agriculturally-rich San Joaquin Valley. Frequently identified as the "bread basket of the world," the Valley plays host to hundreds of commodities, ranging from artichokes to zucchini. Farmers in the San Joaquin Valley utilize a range of irrigation practices as depicted on the poster. These practices may include drip irrigation buried under the soil below asparagus plants to micro-emitters that spray individual trees in a cherry orchard. In addition, millions of dollars are dedicated to improving river habitat for migrating salmon up the Tuolumne River. Undertaken by irrigation districts, State and Federal agencies, the project includes dredging and reshaping the course of the river to its original channel in order to protect young salmon from predators. Learn how farmers conserve and reuse irrigation waters through the photos and text of the San Joaquin Valley poster. |
