What, exactly, is "corporate agriculture"?
Is it a large, faceless entity with little regard for people or the environment?

Valley-L.A. water deal may be in works

Coalition viewpoint...This exchange helps reduce the potential of Westlands farmers from losing a share of next year's water supply that could flow to the ocean instead of farms.  It provides Metropolitan with water they can use now and possibly reduce the likelihood of more severe shortages next year.  This is an excellent example of the water user community working together to bring some flexibility back into the system that has been hobbled by questionable environmental restrictions in recent years.

Mercury News editorial: California must preserve Delta's health

Coalition viewpoint...This editorial is wrong in so many ways.

1.     The Legislature did not call for a "comprehensive study" on water flows in the Delta.  The Legislature specifically prevented the study from considering other factors involved in Delta water, including water to farms and 25 million Californians.

2.     Agriculture does not use 80 percent of the water in California.  DWR cites ag use at only 41 percent.

3.     Farmers are already investing in increased water use efficiency systems.  From 2003-2008, San Joaquin Valley farmers invested over $1.5 billion on highly efficient drip and micro sprinkler irrigation systems.

4.     Legislation calling for increased storage also includes a formula for "beneficiary pay," meaning farmers will pay for their cost of water as will other beneficiaries pay for their share of water resulting from new storage.
