"Think tank" representative suggests couse to water future is more conservation, no new reservoirs and take water away from farmers. San Francisco Chronicle
July 23, 2007

Editor,

Peter Gleick demonstrates his disdain for California farmers by claiming the taking away of water
these farmers use and adding a few more low-flow toilets and shower heads is the solution to our
state’s water woes. If cotton should not be grown in California as Gleick seems to think, should
anyone be growing it? Or do Gleick’s ideas on how water should be used only apply to Californians?

Should people in Egypt or China be growing cotton? He thinks cotton doesn’t contribute
enough to California’s economy because other crops have the ability to generate more income.
What’s next on the chopping block, cheaper varieties of lettuce? Say goodbye to your iceberg
and shaved carrot salad - only radicchio on my table! Gleick seems to think that crops like cotton that contribute less to the economy than another is somehow worth less to society. Does his thinking include jobs? Does the laborer in the field have less worth to California than Gleick’s job at his Pacific Institute “think tank”?

Gleick needs to think again.
