A recent Delta smelt survey revealed no smelt present at the pumping plants, raising the
question of something other than the pumps as the cause for the smelt decline.
Editor, RE: Survey of Delta smelt produces troubling results, 5/31/07 Let’s see if I’ve got this straight—biologist B.J. Miller and state water official Jerry Johns both report that no Delta smelt were recently found near the pumps that send water to two-thirds of all Californians. Does this mean the Delta smelt are dying from causes other than the pumps? Yet, the water supply to 25 million Californians has been slashed by 80 percent by cutting back on water flowing through the pumps. Maybe the pumps aren’t the problem after all.
