The BDCP Project Purpose and the Wisdom of Yogi Berra

Coalition viewpoint...It is easy to make an argument against a program when one does not present all the facts.  This blogger ignores the volumes of material prepared by the BDCP program that is working toward solutions for both a dependable water supply and an environmentally strengthened Delta.  Read the following that taken from the BDCP website or click here to read more material:

The Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) is being developed to promote the recovery of
endangered, threatened and sensitive fish and wildlife species and their habitats in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in a way that will also protect and restore water supplies.

The BDCP is:

  • Identifying conservation strategies to improve the overall ecological health of the Delta
  • Identifying ecologically friendly ways to move fresh water through and/or around the Delta
  • Addressing toxic pollutants, invasive species, and impairments to water quality
  • Establishing a framework and funding to implement the Plan over time

Business as Unusual - Westlands Wheels Water South

Coalition viewpoint...This blog does not include two important facts that makes sense for this water exchange between Westlands and Metropolitan:

1. It was too late for farmers who made planting decisions months ago to do anything with the water that recently became available.

2. There may not be room in San Luis Reservoir to store it until next year so the only options were to exchange it for future water supplies or let it flow to the ocean.

Viewpoints: Delay water bond, but don't rewrite it

Coalition viewpoint...Secretary Snow is correct---restarting the process to present a water bond to California voters will jeopardize our water future and further delay the improvements that are needed today.  An aging infrastructure will become more and more at risk if time is wasted to draft a new water bond.  Increased storage and improved delivery of water will result in environmental benefits to the Delta, as well as securing California's water future.

Letter: Conservation will cure water problem

Coalition viewpoint...The water bond includes funds for solutions to help solve California's water problem.  Those solutions include a modernized infrastructure that delivers the water to its point of use, as well as increased surface and underground storage.  It also provides funding to enhance the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  Yes, conservation is a part of the solution but it is not the only answer to California's water problems. Also, surface irrigation of alfalfa and pasture land provides a needed harvest that supplies the feed for a dairy industry that places multiple products on consumers' tables, including the milk that many mothers will pour this morning on their children's cereal.

Alternatives and the Future of the Delta

Coalition viewpoint...Members of the BDCP and the Delta Stewardship Council have taken their responsibilities seriously and are committed to developing proposal(s) that will secure a reliable water supply and environmentally restore the Delta.  A road map has been established to reach these co-equal goals.  That road map has already included consideration of shared diversion alternatives, not just one option.  To conduct a major evaluation at this time of all the BDCP proposals would be a duplication of work and funds that would later be conducted through the CEQA/NEPA process.  Members of both the BDCP and Delta Plan Stewardship Council have been responsible in their efforts and it is important to allow their work to continue.

Farmers, cities negotiate Calif. water swap

Competing farm, city districts try to strike water deal

Coalition viewpoint...This exchange helps reduce the potential of Westlands farmers from losing a share of next year's water supply that could flow to the ocean instead of farms.  It provides Metropolitan with water they can use now and possibly reduce the likelihood of more severe shortages next year.  This is an excellent example of the water user community working together to bring some flexibility back into the system that has been hobbled by questionable environmental restrictions in recent years.
