“The San Joaquin Valley secured a small measure of relief following a judge’s decision to allow an increase in pumping water to storage facilities south of the Delta during the next two weeks.  The judge determined that no risk exists for salmon from the increased pumping.

January 19, 2010 Dear Speaker Pelosi and Senator Feinstein: 

I am writing to you as the most senior members of the California delegation in the House of Representatives and the Senate, respectively, to urge that you introduce without delay legislation to restore water supplies to areas served by the federal Central Valley Project and the California State Water Project.  It has now become apparent that the only way in which these water supplies will be restored in a manner so as to avoid further human and economic catastrophe is to enact legislation that would provide operational flexibility, which is unavailable under existing constraints imposed under the Endangered Species Act.

Smelt Restrictions Could Prevent Storage
of Water Supplies from Current Storms

The public agency responsible for supplying water to more than a million acres of the Central Valley as well as 1.8 million people in the Bay Area today called on California's senior Senator Diane Feinstein and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to proceed immediately with legislation to lift some of the constraints on California's water system that have been imposed under the federal Endangered Species Act.
